6 Tips For The Serious Blogger

by Kasper Sorensen. on 2007-09-24

If you own a blog or is thinking about starting a blog there are some very important things you have to have in mind if you want it to be successful. You can’t just write anything in a blog and expect people to read it. I know the saying is that everyone has something that is unique and that they should share it with the world. Well that’s good if you are writing for your family or friends, but not if you are writing to potential customers or potential returning visitors.

1. Decide where you want to host your blog. Do you want to go with a free blogging service or do you want to buy a domain name and host your blog there. Well at the moment people seem to go with the free service when it comes to blogging. And even very famous blog does it on a free service. So go for what you want, if you want a name that is easy to remember buy a cheap domain, otherwise go with a service like blogger.

2. Name Your Blog. A lot of people put a lot into the name of their blog, and that can be good or sometimes it doesn’t matter. There are two forms of names that I can recommend. The name that associate you or your business with the blog, or the obscure name that has nothing to do with you or your business but people will remember it. What ever you do make sure you name your blog and the address the same.

3. Design. Design mean more to a blog than people think. Many people just goes with a template but that’s not good. You want your blog to stand out, and you do that by making your own template or at least you own logo. You don’t need much skill to change a logo of a blog, and it is certainly worth it. You also want to go with a simple layout, the simpler the better. People don’t want to be impressed with a blog, they want to read an read without being disturb by flashy elements.

4. Advertising. Advertising shouldn’t be used on a blog, but much targeted advertising can work quite well. You don’t want your reader to think that you are trying to earn money from your blog, then they will disappear. You want them to think that you are trying to help them, and recommending good deals to them. A blog is all about trust

5. Content. What should you write and how should you write is very hard to determine. It depends on what you know and don’t know or what your opinions are. It is important that you don’t just write about things in your blog, you want to give yourself the image of having an opinion and to stand out. Give your blog an image to be remembered for.

6. How often should you post. Post good stuff, don’t post because you feel obliged to. Post whenever you got something to comment on or something new to tell. The important thing is that you post something your readers can use, and want to read. Don’t post every time you have had a shower, people don’t care, you are the face of the blog, and you want your blog to be remembered for good quality content.
