A Unique College in the Arizona Mountains
by Daniel Z. Kane on 2007-09-24Prescott College. You've never heard of it, right?
If you're looking for a traditional college or university, learning more about Prescott is unlikely to be a good use of your time. But, if you're intrigued about the possibility of attending a college with some pretty unique characteristics, keep reading.
What is the Prescott difference? Actually, there are lots of differences, including the level of collaboration between students and faculty, the availability of full and short residency programs, and the existence of majors in areas such as wilderness leadership, abstract art, agroecology, ecopsychology, etc.
Prescott's commitment to ecological literacy also sets it apart, as does it's location in the Arizona mountains, surrounded by a national forest, a setting perfect for its mission.
More differences? How many colleges can you think of with as many field based classes, or average class sizes of 10 students?
And, perhaps Prescott's most important feature is its block and quarter calendar, which allows students to do fieldwork in the Grand Canyon, the Sea of Cortez, Eastern Europe, Latin America, and throughout the world.
If classes of 10 students, having a lot to say about your education, and living in a community with a deep commitment to the environment sound good to you, Prescott should probably be among the colleges you consider.
