Are You Not Asleep - You Must Have Insomnia

by Steve Simpson on 2007-09-24

If you have ever been affected by Insomnia, then you will know its more than not being able to get to sleep, or get to sleep quickly. It can take over your whole life if it is allowed, and might not seem like you have a choice in the matter. There are things you can do to combat insomnia if it does have a hold on you. The purpose of this article is to look at what insomnia actually is, who is affected by it and what you can do about it.

Insomnia can be categorized in many different ways, usually depending on how severe the symptoms, but just what is Insomnia really. Insomniacs, or people suffering from insomnia, typically complain of not being able to close their eyes or even rest their minds for more than a few moments at a time. Insomnia means difficulty in falling or staying asleep, the absence of restful sleep, or poor quality of sleep. It also described as an inability to sleep and/or inability to remain asleep for a reasonable period. Insomnia can affect not only your energy level and your mood, but it generally has quite a large impact on your overall health as well because sleep is one of the keys to keeping your immune system strong.

Insomnia can range from mild to quite severe depending on how often it occurs and also for how long. Many different things including poor eating and sleeping habits, poor lifestyle choices and even depression can cause it. These seem to be the most obvious causes, however there can be much more subtle factors at play, such as physical injury or even an under-active thyroid. Insomnia is generally considered to be chronic if it occurs on most nights and lasts a month or more. Professionals do not normally define it by the number of hours of sleep a person gets or how long it takes to fall asleep. Insomnia is clearly nothing new and countless numbers of people have faced it, and dealt with it, over hundreds of years. Insomnia is a common problem that affects almost everyone at some point, in one way or another.

Insomnia is something that affects people of all age groups. Very you children all the way through to the elderly have been known to suffer from this disease. Almost all adults have felt some symptoms of this before, even if it just symptoms of sleeplessness. Women are usually more susceptible than men, and especially after menopause.

While the treatment for Insomnia usually comes back to the cause of it in the first place, its not always so easy to determine what that actually is. There are some obvious factors like mindset to consider but It's not always simple to diagnose the cause. A person that likes to have regular daytime naps will usually experience some symptoms as will a some people that consume too much caffeine. Two things to cut out if you are one of the ones affected. A person that has a positive outlook will often not experience as severe symptoms as someone who regularly indulges negative thoughts but this is not a simple thing to change.

If it is not obvious to you just what the cause is, It may be time to start looking for other solutions. While sleeping tablets are very often handed out to combat insomnia they can never be more than a short term solution, or a quick fix. They will never actually fix the cause in the first place. There are natural alternatives that can not only cure the symptoms, but also help towards fixing the cause. One such treatment is an herbal supplement known as Thyromine, with all natural ingredients, thyromine helps to work on an under-active thyroid which may be causing your endless nights awake.
