Article Writing: Commandment No 4

by Barry J McDonald on 2007-09-22

Have you put any thought into your article title?

Well have you? I know I’ve been guilty of this in the past as well. I’ve written the article and just copied and pasted a line for the title and left it at that. But how many readers have you lost out on by choosing a bad title?

When you look at most article directories their jam packed with articles so if you put yourself in your readers shoes, what’s the first thing do they do? That’s right; they do a quick scan of the article titles and then choose the ones that draw them in. This mightn’t happen to you if you’re in a very uncompetitive niche and very few people write about it so people will read your article if that’s all that there but what if you not. What can you do??

If you’ve done any marketing at all on the internet you’ll have heard all the stories of how a change to a headline on a sales letter made all the difference, so if you look at it what’s your article title saying about you.

Here’s some tips you can use for guidance. Take some time now and go through a list of articles it doesn’t matter on what subject but try to find a subject that’s been written about a lot. Now grab a piece of paper and scan down through your list off article titles, which ones stand out from the crowd? What makes it so good? Is it because of a particular word? Like “free” ..”easy”..”secrets”..” tips”. Is the title a question to the reader that can’t be answered unless the reader opens the article or is it an opinion maybe one that you disagree with but you want to open it just to see why they’re saying it??

Remember you can have written the best article in the world and it really could generate a lot of traffic but if it’s got a poor or bad title it mightn’t get open at all? So today spend some time on your headline and put yourself in your readers shoes what they would be looking for? And please; don’t put a title to an article that’s not relevant or misleading that’ll just irritate people and you’ll find less will read your other articles.
