Birth Control Pills Information

Birth control pills have been used for over 40 Years. Birth control pills are the most extensive studied medications in the US. In 1960 first birth control pills Enovid was introduced in USA. Now 45 brands of oral contraceptives are available in the market. The dosage of the drug has also been reduced so side effects have also reduced.

Most of the available birth control pills contain two hormones estrogen and progesterone. Both these hormones are synthetic versions of naturally occurring female hormones. The main work of Birth control pills is to prevent ovulation.

2 types of pill packs are available.
28 day pill packs: active hormone pills for 3 weeks and placebo pills for 1 week.
21 day pill packs: Active Hormone pills for 3 weeks.

Active use of birth control pills by women has shown 98-99% effective and positive results in preventing pregnancy. These pills should not be missed as it may not be effective as taken on regular basis. Birth control pills do not protect a woman from sexual transmitted disease and infections.

Birth control pills have side effects which a person should be aware of. Some common side effects of Birth control pills are: Nausea, spotting or breakthrough bleeding, breast tenderness, mood change, decreased sex drive, weight gain, cervical changes, Gallbladder changes and vaginal discharge.

The main benefit of taking birth control pills is that they prevent pregnancy, regulate monthly cycle, reduced menstrual cramps and prevents acne.

Recently FDA has approved one new birth control pill known as Lybrel. This drug stops the cycle of monthly periods among women and prevent them from suffering from pain and dilemma.

Lybrel is a prescription drug and should be taken after consulting a doctor. Never take any birth control pill yourself as it may have serious side effects.
