Breathe Better With Air Purifier With Hepa Filter

by Jason Uvios on 2007-09-22

What comes to the mind instantly when asked about the HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Arrestant) filters?

- Historically it is the Manhattan Project in the 1940s.

- But in contemporary use it's the air purifier.

In either case the source of using HEPA filters is somewhat similar. Cleaning and purification of air was even then the core concern and today it is specifically used in the air purifier.

Efficiency of HEPA filters

Historical importance first

- During the World War II after bombardment of the nuclear weapons, the whole atmosphere was covered by the radioactive particles.

- These highly harmful reactants were putting the human life at risk all over the world. The death rate was going steeper day by day. Some device was becoming important to check this reaction.

- HEPA came to be known since then. A special type of filter which could inhibit the entrance of radioactive particles in the air came to be known as HEPA filter.

Today's context

- Air purifiers mostly are devised with HEPA filters nowadays. The obvious reason is its efficiency in filtering even the smaller contaminant particles floating in the air.

- The Department of Energy or DOE has recommended the HEPA filter as one of the best air filters available.

- Particles of size 0.3 microns can be grabbed by the HEPA filters. Therefore pollen, dust and smoke can easily be grabbed through this type of filter.

- It protects you from most allergens that cause allergy and asthma attacks. Thus the whole family is protected under the umbrella of HEPA filter.

Operation mode

The HEPA filter when attached to an air purifier uses a fan for its operation. As you can well guess the fan has blades or plates. Once the fan is switched on the filter sets right in its action.

- It's easier to catch the bigger particles of pollutants first. The filter cum fan projection sucks these particles with ease thereby making the air free from such contaminants.

- Next it is the turn for minute particles and gaseous substance including chemical substances to get entrapped in the filter. The charcoal part present in the HEPA air filter is exclusively meant for this purpose.

There are a few alternatives for the HEPA filters such as ULPA filters (Ultra High Efficiency Particulate Air) but when you are strictly concerned with the air purifiers you must not go for any alternative. HEPA filter is the best choice undoubtedly.
