Checking your ISP with an Internet Speed Test

by Thomas Haddelin on 2007-09-24

ISP's are providing faster Internet speeds these days, so frequently checking your connection from time to time with an Internet speed test will show you how fast your connection may be. Unfortunately, not all ISP's provide speed tests so finding an accurate one can be tough.

Finding a decent speed test without paying for it can be tough. Most "Freeware" contains spyware or malware that can slow your computer down to a crawl.

There are a few speed tests out there that are actually free. Most, however, tend to give very poor results. Few even work the way they are supposed to work, and some don't work at all making the process of searching and testing each Internet speed test time consuming at best.

70% of American households have an ISP.

Over 60% of those households have DSL or Cable Internet service.

86% of those ISP's DO NOT provide a speed test for their customers!

Perhaps its insane, but I feel we should be able to test our Internet speeds when ever we feel the need. Why pay just to find out our ISP is horrible?

I didn't, and after hundreds of trials and errors (Not to mention getting rid of all the spyware I collected along the way) I finally found a few Internet speed test sites worth adding to my favorites. The basic idea is this... Find one that actually works, doesn't cost anything to use, and doesn't give your computer spyware, and start checking your connection from time to time just to see how your ISP is doing.

Till next time, Thomas Haddelin
