M-16 vs. the AK-47

by Ryan Hills on 2007-09-24

Now its always been a dispute on what the better weapon really is. The M-16 or the AK-47? If you're looking for an answer you just need to ask yourself not which one is better, but for what type of fire would you use?

The AK-47 is a gas operated rifle and was manufactured in Russia by a man named Mikhail Kalashnikov in Russia, It is an old weapon made back in 1947 (that is where the 47 comes from) and is still renowned as the best assault rifle. This is a weapon made for reliability under any circumstance and has enough power to drop just about anything. It was designed for front line infantry battles, spraying off accurate rounds (not at a long distance), and defeating a large ammount of enemies as quickly as possible. But the weapon is also very compact, and not heavy at all, allowing one to move freely on and about unlike a heavy weapon like the SAW. They say that even back during the cold war, you could bury the AK-47, dig it up many months later, and be able to use it later. The AK-47 is very easy to clean, cheap to manufacture, and very popular among many different military, and police organizations across the globe.

But for range and accuracy the AK-47 is no match for the M-16. Now the only one I was ever able to get my hands on was the A-2 model and they have them 1-4 models at least. When they came out with the A-2 they gave it burst fire, in three round shots as burst fire is alot more accurate than a fully automatic, and yet can still go really fast as long as you keep pulling the trigger. The other great feature is the adjustable windage for the iron sights, allowing you to adjust it to make an accurate shot depending on how many yards you're shooting from, and how strong the wind is. There are work books out there, that we personally used on the rifle range to keep track of our shots. this will train your eye to make those difficult shots.

There is a reason that this is the official rifle of the United States military. The further developments of the M-16 were actually made by the United States Marine corps. who are some of the best shots out there. So what kind of rifle do you want for hunting then? The M-16 of course. The AK-47 as we said though is for shorter range defense, as our M-16 is for getting the enemy at great distances. The bullet is so powerful for its small caliber, that it can shoot right through good size trees, and go right through a bullet proof vest at point blank. So if you were to go hunting within M-16 you have to keep in mind the size of the game you're hunting. If you are hunting varmint this will only obliterate your prey and you should go with something smaller. But for larger game like deer this weapon is great in my opinion.

I guess the point of this topic is not to dispute the better weapon but to clarify the uses of both. I have a web-site of my own that has information on all sorts of hunting rifles, and hunting styles. So remember the main points. For closer combat its the AK-47, and for range you want the M-16.
