Manage your career path by choosing the right degree program

by preetijuyal on 2007-02-09

I have a decent job that keeps me busy but I often feel that something is lacking. I want to explore ways by which I can enhance my career and do something that is more fulfilling and exciting.”
“I have just finished my degree program but I am really confused on what to do next…..my friends have decided to start working but I am wondering if that’s really what I want to do at this stage.”
“I am a marketing analyst but I want to try out something different now. Probably, picking a degree in a different field would help me change my career path. I really need some help in finding out what options I have.”
These are just a few scenarios and each one of us goes through a similar situation at some stage of our life. This is the time when we really need to sit back and plan our career path because the decision that we take now would affect us for the rest of our lives.
How to get started?
Before you get into the thinking gear, ask yourself the following questions:

What is it that I really want to do? Which field would I like to work in? Do I have the right kind of qualifications to go in for my dreams?  What should I do to enhance my skills? Which online courses, degree programs or training should I undergo to ensure that I am prepared to pursue my dreams?   From where should I acquire the required skills? Who can help me in my college search ?

Listen to your inner self…
Whenever you are deciding upon what you want to do in the future, always listen to your inner self. Would I like to spend the rest of my life working on computers, looking after the sick people, traveling to far-off countries, managing a sales team, designing textiles, and so on? Trust your choice for that will not only give you happiness but also lead you to the path of excellence.
Need some help…
Once you have decided upon your field, the next step is identifying the right degree program and the list of colleges that offer that degree. Today, we have several online college directories that provide consolidated information on the courses offered by various colleges, eligibility and other details. One very good site that I have come across is Education-advancement.com that offers a complete guide to online education and college degree programs. Most of these information resources are worth a look as they will help you identifying the degree program that suits you the best and in speeding up your college search.
Getting closer to the goal….
Once you are done with the above, you are already halfway through. The moment you know where you want to reach, it becomes easy to reach that point. A little planning at this stage will ensure that you never look back.
