Small Buy-In One Table Sit & Go Tournaments

by Alex Korablev on 2007-09-24

Are you new to online poker? Are you curious as to what a Sit & Go tournament is? Do you want to play, but you're not sure how it works? If so, you've come to the right place. First, we'll explain the differences between a single-table tournament and a "regular" game. Then, you need to know about the different tournament types. After that, you'll need to know how to understand tournament and buy-in fees. So keep reading. By the time you get to the bottom, you'll be ready to play Sit & Go poker tournaments like a pro.

First, it's important to understand what a tournament is. In a tournament, each player comes to the table with the same amount of money. The players play hand after hand of poker, eliminating players who lose all of their initial bankroll. Play continues until only one player remains with all of the money.

There are several ways to differentiate between types of tournaments. Tournaments can be single-table or multi-table. In a multi-table tournament, there are often dozens if not hundreds of players. Each table generally has eight players, depending upon the tournament rules. Each table plays in the tournament format until they are left with just one player at each table. Then all of the players who are left with cash at the end of that stage join each other at another table. In this way, many players are eliminated at the same time, whittling the number of players down to a single table easily. In a single-table tournament, generally registration is limited to eight or ten players, so players are eliminated one by one.

Additionally, tournaments can be Sit & Go or scheduled. Sit & Go tournaments are set up online so that when the table is full, the tournament begins immediately. Sit & Go tournaments are single-table tournaments, because the online poker room begins the game as soon as the table is full. Scheduled tournaments generally allow as many players as possible, and begin at a specific time.

Buy-in fees seem complicated, but it's not very difficult. Usually the fee structure is listed as something like $4+$.40. This means that the buy-in is $4, and the tournament fee is $.40. The $4 goes to the tournament's prize money, while the $.40 goes to the online poker room.

So, if you want to play a $4+$.40 single-table Sit & Go, you'll need to pay $4.40, of which $4 will go to prize money. You'll be playing at a single table, and you'll start playing as soon as the table fills up!
