Why Is A Pregnancy Blood Test The Most Accurate?

by earlyretirement on 2007-09-22

Having a baby is a blessing and some couples try for long period of time in order to have one. Many people may even follow intensive treatments for the same, whereas some just get lucky. However, when a pregnancy is achieved, it is important to all couples that they know as soon as possible. For that purpose, there are a number of tests available.

Different Types Of Pregnancy Tests

There are two main types of pregnancy tests. One is the urine test, which can be conducted at home, and the other is the most accurate of them both: the pregnancy blood test.

In order for you to determine which test is the most accurate you must understand how a pregnancy test works. When conception takes place, a hormone called the Human Chorionic Gonadotropin or HCG is created as the effect of the fertilized egg that begins its implant in the walls of the uterus.

This hormone can be detected in a pregnancy blood test as soon as six days after conception, though this may differ from person to person. Both in the urine and blood pregnancy test the same hormone determines if you are pregnant or not.

Why is the Pregnancy Blood Test More Accurate?

The pregnancy blood test is usually more accurate, as the hormone is more abundant in the blood and thus it is detected easier than with a urine test. For a urine test to show you the existence of your pregnancy, you must wait for at least a week after you have missed your period, as by then the hormone would be abundant in the urine as well.

A pregnancy blood test can only be performed in the hospital with proper instruments, while a urine test can easily be done in the convenience of your home. Therefore, more women choose the urine test over the pregnancy blood test today.

Those who are trying hard to have a baby cannot usually wait for natural symptoms such as a missed period to show up. They will thus approach their doctor earlier and request a pregnancy blood test.

Helpful Tip

Both urine and pregnancy tests are quick and easy as well as accurate. However, if you want to be 100 percent sure you are pregnant within a week from the time of intercourse, your best option would have to be the pregnancy blood test.

For some, pregnancy is something they have been waiting several months or years for. For some it is a total surprise and for others something in between. Regardless of how your pregnancy was confirmed now is the time to share your joy with your loved ones.
