Wi-Fi Transportation Service – Stay Connected On The Move

by Monika on 2007-09-22

To begin an article on Wi-Fi Transportation service, I think one needs to know what Wi-Fi is all about. Wi-Fi is an acronym for ‘wireless fidelity'. It is defined as a `term for certain types of wireless local area networks (WLAN) that use specifications conforming to IEEE 802.11b.

It has evolved to peter out the disadvantages of the wired LAN. Wi-Fi has already been accepted in many environments as an alternative to the more conventional wired LAN. This new wireless technology has greater following in transit public places, such as airports, hotels, and other services. These public places offer access to WiFi networks so that people can log onto the Internet and receive emails on the move. In the Wi-Fi parlance, these locations are known as hotspots.

With every passing day, the importance of the Internet and inability to live without it has led to conferences and seminars all over the world to better Wi-Fi services. Wireless broadband technology is the only method that can really keep you connected to your business partners and clients, no matter where you are and whther you are stationary or on the move.

The WiFi@Transportation Summit was held at Stockholm and it featured several high profile WiFi deployment case studies. The attendees were provided with detailed presentations from transportation operators regarding business strategies for deploying wireless broadband technologies. It also showed the impact of the deployments on employees and passengers.

The Stockholm Subway conducted an on-site demonstration of its wireless broadband deployment which uses the Appear Networks wireless communication platform.

The employee’s precise location in the WiFi network is identified within a few meters, and based upon this precise positioning, personalized, location-specific information requested by the employee is transmitted.

With Wi-Fi transportation gaining steady momentum, the one place that has seen the most of this technology till date is Atlanta. As the old saying goes, whether you go to heaven or hell, you will have to change planes in Atlanta. Therefore, it goes without saying that Atlanta will have access to Wi-Fi service, probably earlier than the others do.

Soon the world's busiest airport, at Atlanta you will have improved cell phone coverage and greatly expanded access to the Internet on Wi-Fi connections.

Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport has announced the details of a multi-faceted contract with SITA for wireless and management services. This contract includes the design and implementation of an airport-wide Wi-Fi and cellular wireless network, as well as management of the airport's new fiber, cellular and Wi-Fi network for a period of one year.

Benefits are priceless.

This will improve the passenger experience at Atlanta Airport by allowing travelers to access the Internet and use mobile phones anywhere in the airport.
Passengers traveling through the Atlanta airport can stay connected via Wi-Fi from the front door of the airport, to the underground transportation mall, to every gate at every focal point.

A Wi-Fi system for the entire airport will provide Internet access for all passengers. A "neutral host" will provide Internet access, allowing passengers the flexibility to choose their own Wireless ISP (Internet Service Provider).
The wireless system will support data services, voice and video.

This secure system is designed for use by the City of Atlanta DOA, the airlines, and airport tenants as well.
